Vice President Leni Robredo and Comelec (Commission on Elections) Chairman Andres Bautista categorically denied having a secret meeting this Tuesday night, July 12. In an press conference this Thursday, both Robredo and Bautista admitted attending the same event, but noted that they did not even talk to each other. Watch the video below.
“Walang ganun na secret meeting. Nag attend ako ng isang dinner party, siguro mga 40 tao yung nandun. Isa si Comelec Chairman (Andres Bautista) sa mga guests, pero hindi ko nga maalala na nag-usap kami. Parang nagbatian lang, pero hindi kami nagkausap.” VP Robredo said in front of reporters at the Quezon City Reception House.
Robredo also mentioned the names of the other guests present in the said event, including U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg, and Ombudsman Conchita Claudio Carpio-Morales. The vice president said her three children were also there, and that there was no secret meeting. At some point, she dubbed as the viral video as “very malicious.”
The newly-appointed Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chief noted that it would be better if the said video showed her actual conversation with Chairman Bautista, who also explained his side on this controversy. He was earlier accused by the six Comelec commissioners of ‘failure of leadership’ in the recent elections.
“It was a social gathering. The members of the diplomatic corps were there. We didn’t talk about politics…Nakapag-hi hello lang ako kay VP (VP and I just exchanged greetings.). The secret meeting is not true. Maraming testigo (There are a lot of witnesses),” Bautista said in an interview over DZBB radio also this Thursday.
Meanwhile, losing vice-presidential candidate, former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. released his comment on this alleged VP Robredo-Chairman Bautista secret meeting. “Whether it was a meeting or a get together at a party or whatever it was, it is improper for them to be seen together while the case is ongoing.” He wrote on Facebook.
