Watch: Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte on Time Magazine Cover (Video)
Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte is on the latest Time Magazine cover, with the photo taken by Edwin C. Tuyay, and bearing the headline,” The Punisher: Why Rodrigo Duterte is the Philippines’ Next Leader” written by Charlie Campbell. The good news was reported at ANC’s ‘The World Tonight’ by Tina Monzon-Palma. Watch below.
In the said article of Time magazine May 23, 2016 issue, Rody Duterte was profiled as the country’s next president. Among the topics about Duterte that was mentioned include his being a tough-talking mayor, his controversial remarks towards the Pope and the Australian rape victim, and his alleged link to the Davao Death Squad (DDS).
The Duterte Time magazine edition article also lists the issues he will inherit from the administration of President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino. This includes the ongoing territorial dispute on the West Philippine Sea versus China, and the inclusive growth for the poor. Some netizens posted photos of the magazine they saw on National Bookstore.
Meanwhile, in a recent article at Time.com, Ian Bremmer explained five facts that would explain why more Filipinos voted for Duterte as the next president. First on the list is his being a genuine punisher, whose leadership in Davao City has turned the city from one of the most violent cities in the country to one of the world’s safest cities.
Second, Duterte was dubbed as an unapologetically brash in which some political observers compared him to Donald Trump. Third, the Punisher is not a member of the political and social elite, which many poor families are very angry at. Fourth and fifth, Duterte has made a strong statement against China that no one else has dared to say.
By the way, this is not the first time that Duterte was featured at Time magazine, but not on cover. Some 14 years ago, the prestigious magazine had a story about Duterte and named him as “The Punisher” for his drastic but successful actions against crime and drugs in Davao City. But of course, no one would ever thought that he would eventually become president.
