Watch: President Duterte Shakes Sen Leila de Lima’s Hand During SONA, Then Makes Funny Face (Video)
To the surprise of everyone, President Rodrigo Duterte shook the hands of Senator Leila de Lima shortly before he delivered his first SONA (State of the Nation Address) this Monday, July 25, 2016. But that’s not all. The president made a funny face as he walk to the rostrum. Watch the funny video below, along with Sen. de Lima’s reaction afterwards.
Apparently, it appears that many televiewers initially not have noticed this unexpected gesture of President Duterte to Sen de Lima, who has been criticizing his style of fighting illegal drugs. This is because the the funny scene happened so fast, and the neophyte senator was not facing the camera when the president stopped to shake her hand.
As you can see, President Duterte was walking on the aisle when he immediately stopped and shook Sen. De Lima’s hand. But after he walked away for about three steps, the president looked back at her and made a funny face. After the SONA, reporters could not help but ask Sen. de Lima’s reaction after her unexpected handshake with the president.
“Several feet away pa siya sakin, nakita ko na siya at nakita na niya ako. Pero gumanon lang siya. But I was surprised nung nandun na siya sa harap ko. Huminto siya mismo. He extended his hand. He didn’t say anything, he just smiled at me. Ako naman, ang nasabi ko lang, “Hi, Sir.” She said, and just laughed when asked about the president’s funny face.
Just last Friday, then-incoming House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said that the lower chamber will probe Sen. de Lima on her possible link with the top drug lords inside the inside the New Bilibid Prison. He also questioned the lady senator’s plan to investigate the alleged extra-judicial killings of drug suspects in various anti-drug operations of the PNP.
But before that, De Lima, being the Justice Secretary during the Noynoy Aquino administration, questioned the timing of the Supreme Court (SC) ruling to dismiss the plunder case against former president and now Pampanga 2nd District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who happened to attend President Duterte’s first SONA.
