Watch: Duterte to Block Renewal of ABS-CBN Franchise, Accuses Kapamilya Network of Estafa (Video)

President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday, April 27 that he will block the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise, and accused the Kapamilya network of swindling or estafa. The president announced his plans a week after he signed Republic Act No 10925, granting GMA Network for another 25 years of franchise. Watch video below.

“[The franchise] has been there for 25 years. The law said it’s okay, only if you adhere to journalistic standards. What did you do to us? Estafa, swindling, not only me but Chiz Escudero, many of us. Son of a b*tch, you collected outright then you commit estafa,” President Duterte told reporters in an ambush interview.

“So I will file a complaint. Congress, no need to renew it. But to operate is something else, so I will point this out, your garbage, then we’ll see. If you’re you are engaged in swindling. For all you know, how many companies paid you and you did not air it?” He added, noting that he will block ABS-CBN’s renewal of franchise.

And although President Duterte did not provide further details, he accused the Kapamilya network of not providing him the airtime for his political ad during the election campaign period he had paid for. ABS-CBN’s franchise is set for renewal in 2020 via House Bill 4349, which is still in the House committee level.

As of posting, ABS-CBN has not yet commented on this issue. But last April, ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III  said that he is not anticipating any significant issues with regards to the franchise renewal. This was his response after President Duterte accused ABS-CBN and Inquirer for being bias in their news reports.

“Inquirer, mga bullsh*t kayo, pati ‘yang ABS-CBN, basura ‘yang inano ninyo. Dapat may magsabi sa inyo ngayon, mga put*ng-ina ninyo, sinobrahan ‘nyo ang kalokohan ninyo,” President Duterte said at that time, adding that he is not threatening them. However, he noted that someday, karma will come to them.
