Watch: Duterte Explains Why He Exposed de Lima’s ‘Affair’ With Driver, Threatens to Leave UN (Video)

President Rodrigo Duterte explained this Sunday early morning, August 21, why he had to publicly announced the alleged affair between Senator Leila de Lima and her driver, Ronnie Palisoc Dayan. Later, he threatened the United Nations (UN) that Philippines might leave the international body for interfering with his administration. Watch the full video below.

At the first part of the press conference in Davao City which started at about 1 am this Sunday, President Duterte said that some of his female relatives asked him why he decided to shame Sen de Lima publicly regarding her private life. The president said that he had to reveal it because the ‘romantic relationship’ is directly connected to corruption.

President Duterte reiterated that the said relationship is immoral simply because Sen. De Lima’s alleged driver-lover’ is a married man. According to the president, this ‘de-Lima-and-driver’ affair led to special privileges inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), where illegal drugs trade and cooking of shabu is rampant, as well as women, alcohol, and guns.

“Are you not surprised that during her term and for a longer period when she became the Secretary of Justice, there were special privileges granted to almost all inmates?…It is the farthest from my mind to derogate your person, Sen. De Lima, but it was your greed and your immorality that did you in.” President Duterte said, accusing her of allowing them to happen.

According to the president, it is quite unbelievable that a simple driver of an elected government official could go in and out the Bilibid and deal with high-profile drug lords without the authority given to him by Sen. de Lima. Nevertheless, he said the some NBP personnel are now willing to cooperate in digging deeper in the senator’s link to illegal drugs.

On the latter part, President Duterte demanded UN experts to have a public debate with him regarding the series of reports of extrajudicial killings or summary executions of individuals allegedly involved in illegal drugs in the country, He also said the Philippines might decide to separate from the UN if the organization will stop criticizing his administration.

“I’d like to talk to that alleged expert of the UN; I demand that he comes here. Or if he wants we can go to a third country. Let him talk to me and let him face me with hard facts. Not newspaper clippings….Let’s have a debate…When were you here the last time? Never. Except to criticize… When have you done a good deed to my country?” He said.
