Watch: De Lima Walks Out During Cayetano Speech, Removed From Senate Committee on Human Rights (Video)
Senator Leila de Lima has been removed from being the chairperson of Senate committee on justice and human rights, after a 16-4 vote and 2 abstain votes this Monday, September 19. She was replaced by Senator Richard Gordon. On the same event, Sen de Lima walks out the Senate hall while Senator Alan Peter Cayetano is delivering his privilege speech. Watch video below.
“Kitang kita po ang bias ng ilang senator sa laban sa krusada ng pangulo…Let someone else chair. In my past speech I said, I’m not even asking that she removed from the committee on justice only on certain hearing where we cannot expect cold neutrality,” Sen. Cayetano said, accusing De Lima of not being fair in the Senate hearing on extrajudicial killings.
Cayetano also questioned the credibility of the supposed witness, Edgar Matobato, stressing out that De Lima is using the Senate committee to link President Rodrigo Duterte to the killings and to the so-called DDS (Davao Death Squad). Shortly after his speech, Senator Manny Pacquiao asked the Senate that the leadership of that committee be vacant.
“Lahat naman tayo dito tao lang e, so she didn’t want to listen and I didnt mean to offend but there’s no other way I could say it. How cannot I sugarcoat. Yun ang pananaw ko,for me those are the facts I was quoting but option naman parati ng kahit sinong senador na makinig or dun siya sa kwarto niya makinig.” Cayetano said when De Lima left.
“I cannot stand it (Cayetano’s speech) because I’m also gonna deliver my privilege speech tomorrow and I cannot confront him (Cayetano) right now,” De Lima said in an ambush interview with reporters, after she walked out in the middle of Cayetano’s address. The neophyte senator insisted that President Duterte is behind all these actions against her.
