Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. surrendered to PNP (Philippine National Police) Chief Director General Ronald “Bato” De la Rosa this Tuesday, at around 4 am. This is after President Rodrigo Duterte demanded him this Monday to surrender with 24 hours. Mayor Espinosa and his son, Kerwin Espinosa are both being linked to illegal drugs. “President Rodrigo R. Duterte demanded the surrender of Mayor Ronaldo Espinosa Sr., of Albuera, Leyte and his son, Kerwin Espinosa, on the grounds of drug-trafficking and coddling, within 24 hours. Otherwise, an order of “shoot on sight” will be given if they resist and endanger the lives of arresting police officers,” Malacañang said in a statement.
President Duterte issued the order after two bodyguards of Mayor Espinosa named Jessie Ocares, 34, and Marcelo Adorco, 40, were arrested during a buy-bust operation in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Benolho, Albuera last Thursday, at around 5:30 pm. Also arrested were Jose Antipuesto, Jeffrey Pesquera and Ernesto Dumalat; all of them are employees of the mayor.
The said anti-illegal drug operation was conducted in a tennis court, near the houses of Mayor Espinosa and his son, Kerwin. Police reportedly recovered at least P1.9 million worth of shabu Ocares and Adorco were armed with .45 caliber pistol each, but they did not resist the arrest. The Espinosa father-and-son were not around during the operation.
In a press conference this Tuesday, 3 pm, PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa presented Mayor Espinosa to the media. He said that the PNP vows to end illegal drugs in the country in 3-6 months as being strongly campaigned by President Duterte. adding that the alleged narco-mayor is will be turned over to the CIDG (Criminal Investigation and Detection Group).
In his statement, Mayor Rolando Espinosa admitted that his son, Kerwin, who is still at large, is involved in illegal drugs trade. For this, PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa noted that the mayor will cooperate with the government’s fight against illegal drugs. Later, the tough PNP chief demanded the young Espinosa to surrender as soon as possible or die.
When asked to confirm the earlier statement of Napolcom (National Police Commission) that they have now solid evidences or “probable cause” against Police Director Joel Pagdilao and Chief Superintendent Edgardo Tinio on their alleged involvement in illegal drugs, the tough PNP chief noted that the said agency is the one investigating the case.
