Vice President Leni Robredo announced that she is not in favor of the burial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery). This is after President Rodrigo Duterte recently reiterated his approval on this matter. In fact, she plans to join the protest rally on September 18, 2016, the tentative date of Marcos burial.
“We strongly oppose the decision to bury former President Ferdinand Marcos in the.” A statement reads on the official Facebook page of VP Leni Robredo this Monday, August 8. She has been mentioning the same during the election campaign period, and mentioned it during the vice-presidential debate, Pilipinas Debates 2016 last April via CNN Philippines.
“How can we allow a hero’s burial for a man who has plundered our country and was responsible for the death and disappearance of many Filipinos? Those who have greatly committed crimes and moral turpitude to the Filipino people cannot be buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani.” The widow of the former DILG Secretary Jessie Robredo added.

According to VP Robredo, President Duterte’s approval of the Marcos burial at Libingan ng mga Bayani will not unite Filipinos, and will instead deepen the unhealed wounds of the survivors of Martial Law under the Marcos administration. The HUDCC (Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council) chief head also insisted that the late president Marcos is not and was never a hero.

As we all know, VP Robredo beat then-Senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. (the lone son of the late President Marcos) during the last 2016 elections, and led by only 263,473 votes. The younger Marcos filed an electoral protest on alleged cheating, with the Supreme Court (SC) now sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET).
In his recent speech, President Duterte reminded the public on his previous statement during his presidential campaign that he will allow the burial of Marcos because he believes that the late president was a soldier and a hero, making him qualified to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. The statement was warmly accepted by the Marcos family.

The president also noted that he will allow protest rally on the day or even for a month with no anti-riot police to block them, provided that rallyists will respect the rights of others to use the road, and that they will not cause traffic. And because of this, an insider from the Robredo camp told us that the vice president might join religious groups in a peaceful rally.
