A netizen filed an online petition at Change.org this Thursday, December 1, requesting the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to release a P500 bill featuring the face of the late-president, former President Ferdinand Marcos. The petition comes less than two weeks after the Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) last November 18.
The said Marcos P500-bill petition was filed by a certain Basil Avancado, who also filed a petition for the removal of the dog of the late-president Corazon Aquino at the LNMB. According to him, the BSP has already approved the P500-bill with Marcos, and was set for mass production in late 1985, a year before the EDSA People Power Revolution.
The petitioner cited an article at Celebrate Magazine of Toronto, Canada in 2008, written by Romeo Castillo MananQuil, the artist who designed the Marcos P500-bill, as per request by the BSP. The article, titled “How I ‘Made Money’ for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas,” was also published on MananQuil’s official website, and is still live as of posting.

“The design work was divided among the artists. With the new 500-peso bill, I was asked to do a portrait of then President Ferdinand Marcos. I decided to render a casual and relaxed portrait of Marcos on one side of the bill, while the other would feature an illustration of the Batasang Pambansa.” Romeo Castillo MananQuil wrote on his article.
“My 500-peso Marcos bill was never circulated and with the events that proceeded: the snap elections, the disputed victory of Marcos, the success of People’s Power in February 1986 and the instatement of Aquino as President, who soon ordered the redesign of the bill to honor her husband, Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.” He further explained.

Meanwhile, Avancado noted that the Marcos hero’s burial is a valid reason for the placing of Marcos at P500-bill, replacing Ninoy and Cory Aquino. He added the BSP has already approved it earlier, and that it’s now to move and pursue it. We at Taho News are not encouraging nor discouraging to sign the petition.
