Davao City Mayor Rodrigo ‘Rody’ Duterte has accepted the challenge of vice presidential candidate, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to open his Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) bank accounts at Julia Vargas Avenue branch in Pasig City this Monday, May 2. This is to prove that he has no millions of pesos deposited in that account.
As noted by CNN Philippines, Mayor Rody Duterte, who has been urging him to sign a waiver so that his bank accounts will be disclosed the public, will be represented by his legal counsel, Atty. Salvador Panelo. During the press conference this Friday, Duterte urges Trillanes to show up so he could see for himself if his allegations are true or not.

As reported by Inquirer this Wednesday, April 27, Senator Trillanes said that Mayor Rody Duterte had at least P211 million in his Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) bank accounts at Julia Vargas Avenue branch in Pasig City in 2014. The senator added that those Duterte bank accounts were joint accounts with his daughter Inday Sara.
Without mentioning the name of his sources, Trillanes noted that on March 28, 2014 (Duterte’s 69th birthday), eight cash deposits were made to these bank accounts with a total amount of P197 million. This includes four P20-million bank deposits, which Trillanes said were deposited to Mayor Duterte’s BPI accounts via interbank transfers.

This Thursday, journalist Ellen Tordesillas wrote on Facebook, saying that her friend deposited P500 to the supposed Duterte’s BPI account. She posted a photo of the deposit slip, proving that the account exists. Hours later, Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Mar Roxas said his camp has also deposited P500 to the same account, calling Duterte a liar.

On the same day, Mayor Duterte admitted having several BPI accounts particularly at the Julia Vargas branch. However, he categorically denied Trillanes’ allegations that they contain millions. Instead, the tough-talking mayor said one account only contains P17,000 and the other has less than P50,000, challenging Trillanes to prove his claim.
