Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte is being consistently requested by his increasing number of supporters to run for president in the 2016 elections. But while he said multiple times that he is not interested to be next president of the country, there are speculations that he will eventually run and might file his COC (Certificates of Candidacy) on Thursday, October 15.
Meanwhile, Mayor Duterte announced the names of the senatorial candidates that he will support, regardless if he runs of not. Leading on his list is Pinoy boxing icon and Sarangani Congressman Manny Pacquiao, who has yet to choose which political party to join in. And for the numerous absences of Pacquiao in Congress, the tough mayor was quick to defend him.

“He (Manny Pacquiao) was always absent because he was training, but he said he is retiring from boxing, so I guess he can give his time to the Senate this time.” Mayor Duterte said on a press conference this Friday, October 9. Duterte and Pacquiao met each other last August in a hotel in Davao City, and their photo together was posted on Facebook.

Next on Duterte’s senatorial list is former justice secretary Leila de Lima, whom the hard-hitting mayor had a word war with early this year. It started when Duterte is being linked to the alleged summary executions of criminals by the Davao Death Squad (DDS). But because both Duterte and de Lima came from San Beda Law School, he said he will support her.
Mayor Rody Duterte also announced support for another fellow graduate of San Beda Law School, Bayan Muna Partylist Representative Neri Colmenares. Serving his third term in Congress, Colmenaresa is also a human rights lawyer. But recently, his name went viral after joking that he is AlDub’s official lawyer. He will run under the Poe-Escudero tandem.

Among the other senatorial bets that Duterte will support are Senator Serge Osmeña, former senators Panfilo Lacson and Juan Miguel Zubiri; retired police General and ACT-CIS partylist Representative Samuel Pagdilao, Representatives Ferdinand Martin Romualdez (of the 1st District of Leyte) and Roman Romulo (of Pasig City), and Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno.

Recently, former North Cotabato Gov. Emmanuel Piñol, who is also one of Mayor Duterte’s allies, was reported to have revealed almost the same list, noting that these 2016 senatorial bets might run as independent candidates. Las Piñas Representative Mark Villar was on the list, but said he will run for reelection, while Romulo reportedly decided not to run.
