Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas falls from a motorcycle while conducting an inspection of damages caused by Typhoon Hagupit (Ruby) on Sunday. The photo went viral on social media, earning mostly negative reactions. Nevertheless, Malacanang defended him.

According to reports, the Mar Roxas motorcycle incident occurred in Taft, Samar Island. As you can see on the photo, the DILG secretary is wearing a yellow raincoat and a Nike cap (instead of the required motorcycle helmet). His left hand is stretched to the ground, as he tries to recover from his fall.

Apparently, former Bayan Muna representative Teddy Casino was among the first who commented on the issue, saying, “Lesson for the day: Huwag mag motor pag may bagyo. At saka magsuot ng helmet.” (Lesson for the day: Don’t ride a motorcycle when there’s a typhoon. And always wear a helmet)

But while a lot of netizens emphasized Roxas not wearing a helmet, Malacanang Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said that the public should not sensationalize the issue. She noted that Typhoon Ruby offered no other means of travel in the area other than a motorcycle.

“Sana huwag na po nating bigyan ng kulay. Kawawa na nga ho ‘yung tao nandun na at sumemplang na nga ho at pasalamat po tayo — pasalamat po kami, at least, hindi ho nasaktan si Secretary Mar.” Valte told reporters this Monday during the press briefing.

“Nakikiusap naman po tayo na mag-focus na lang po tayo doon sa trabahong kailangan hong gawin ‘nung ating mga ground team at ‘yung mga kasamahan po natin dito sa Manila.” Valte added, noting that Roxas is not the only government official who rode a motorcycle just to reach Dolores.

(Hopefully, we don’t put color on what happened to Secretary Mar. It’s a pity that he fell off. We are just glad that he was not hurt. We are requesting everyone to focus on the work that should be done by our ground team and other teams here in Manila.)
