A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Mati City in Davao Oriental this Saturday, September 24, at 6:53 am, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). And although there were no reports of injuries and damage to properties, some haters of President Rodrigo Duterte blame him, and dubbed it as “karma.” Below are some of them.
According to Phivolcs, Intensity 5 was felt in the city, as well as in Davao City, while Intensity 4 was felt in Alabel, Glan and Malapatan, Sarangani province; and Polomolok, South Cotabato. On the other hand, Intensity 3 was felt in Tupi, South Cotabato Cagayan De Oro City. A series of strong aftershocks occurred in those areas as Phivolcs has expected.
As noted by the US Geological Services (USGS), the epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude earthquake was in Barangay Bobon in Mati, Davao Oriental and had a depth of 69 kilometers. But while many Filipinos prayed the safety of the residents, some Duterte haters blame President Duterte, noting that the earthquake is a punishment from God.
Translating to English, almost all these anti-Duterte individuals said that the earthquake is “karma” because of the killings of drugs suspects in the Philippines brought about by President Duterte’s strong campaign against illegal drugs. Some of them noted that Davao is getting unlucky, while one of them said he hopes all tragedies will happen in Davao.

We at TN understand that we may have different views, and that not everyone agree with President Duterte’s way of talking. However, we strongly disagree with people blaming him for any natural disaster not only in Davao, and concluding that God is angry at him, and punishing the people. Instead, we Filipinos should help each other in times like this.
