TV personality Kris Aquino had nothing but praises to Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol this Friday, November 11 in an event where they were both present. In an awkward moment, Kris Aquino hosted the National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Summit in Davao City that day, and Sec Piñol had to explain the status of abaca production in the Philippines and its importance. Standing on stage beside Kris, the Agriculture secretary said that the said industry was neglected, and should now be saved.

“Abaca is found only in the Philippines, only in the Philippines. It is the strongest fiber in the world. Pero pinabayaan natin,” Piñol told Kris. But before he can continue, Kris immediately butt in and asked him, “Sino nagpabaya? Si Alcala?“, referring to former Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, who served under the PNoy administration.

“Hindi po. Hindi po. Matagal na po ito. Ito po ang ugali ng Pilipino minsan na ang sariling yaman in-ignore natin,” Piñol replied, as the audience laughed at the awkward situation for him and Kris. He added that there is now a shortage of abaca, noting that abaca is also being used in producing peso bills. Apparently, Kris did not know about it, and she was amazed.

Piñol noted that in June when has not yet taken oath, he promised a P100-million budget for the abaca farmers alone, and that P50 million (half of it) has already been released.”You released it in just four months? Ang taray mo,” Kris told Piñol, who told her that there is enough money for the people as long as there is no corruption in the government.
