Despite many netizens agree on the new Tekken 7 Pinay character named Josie Rizal, actor-politician ER Ejercito strongly disagrees with the idea. This is after the disqualified Laguna governor learned that the new character of the famous video game was named after the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
“Parang di naman ata tama na lapastanganin ang pangalan ng ating pambansang bayani. Sa dinami dami ng pangalan, bakit naman yung kay Dr. Jose Rizal pa and ginamit nila? Wala na silang maisip na iba? Isa pa, di naman siya fighter.” ER Ejercito told reporters this Monday on his home in Pagsangjan, Laguna.
(I think it’s not right to insult the name of our national hero. There are many other names, why use the name of Dr. Jose Rizal? Can they think of another name? Another thing, he (Rizal) is not a fighter.)
“Bilang kababayan niya dito sa Laguna at bilang isang Pilipinong nagmamamahal sa bayan niya, sa tingin ko ay nararapat lang na wag payagan na gamitin ang Josie Rizal sa isang video game.” Ejercito added, who recently announced that he has plans to do a movie about the fallen 44 SAF members.
(As one of his countrymen here in Laguna and as a Filipino who loves his country, I think that it is a must that we don’t allow the name Josie Rizal in a video game.)
Dr.Jose Rizal was born in Calamba, Laguna on June 19, 1861. Despite belonging to a wealthy family, Rizal was famous for his writings against the Spanish colonization in the Philippines. Among this famous novels are “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.” He was executed on December 30, 1896 by firing squad.
Ejercito, the nephew of former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada, added that although it could be an honor to use the name of Rizal, it should be used in a more appropriate way. The unseated governor noted that Rizal’s name has been used in school, roads, and even the national park, Luneta.
Emilio Ramon “ER” Ejercito was elected as Laguna governor in the 2013 elections. But in May 2014, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) disqualified him for overspending during the campaign period. He was replaced by Vice Governor Ramil Hernandez. Ejercito has been doing movies for the Metro Manila Film Festival.
As of posting, Tekken 7 publisher Bandai Namco Games has no comment on Ejercito’s observations. Josie Rizal is one of the new characters to join Jin Kazama, and his ego, Devil Jin. The Pinay character was designed by Mari Shimazaki and was co-created by Mark “MarkMan” Julio, who has a Filipino blood.
