South China Morning Post (SCMP) recently reported that Cielito “Honeylet” Avanceña was spotted shopping at Times Square in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. As we all know, Honeylet is President Rodrigo Duterte’s common-law wife. But while there is really nothing wrong with the report, Raissa Robles was obviously bias when she reported about it.
“Avanceña, also known as “Honeylet” was seen sporting a black dress and a pearl necklace, accompanied by several suited bodyguards. She window-shopped at British shoe and bag retailer Jimmy Choo, and spent at least 20 minutes at luxury Italian leather goods store Salvatore Ferragamo.” SCMP wrote on its news report, Friday, May 13.
“A saleswoman said Avanceña had stayed for around 20 minutes, but did not reveal what she bought.” The report added, and included a photo of Honeylet Avanceña taken by a SCMP photographer. Note, however that the actual report is about President Duterte visiting Hong Kong, and will make a speech in front of the Filipino community there.

Now, let’s see how veteran journalist Raissa Robles reported it. First, instead of re-posting SCMP’s report, she decided to write it in her own words, and added her own opinion. She even mention that a Ferragamo bag could cost from P30,000 to P140,000, and that the minimum monthly wage of an OFW in Hong Kong is around P27,500.
But while Robles also mentioned that Honeylet Avanceña is a businesswoman and was once a nurse in the United States, she did not mention that that the latter has a meat shop, and a canteen catering service and 11 Mister Donut franchises. The journalist also failed to mention that Honeylet once said that she’s not relying on President Duterte for support.

Ms. Robles also asked, “Is Ms. Avanceña entitled by law to have bodyguards paid with tax money?” If her report is not intended to be bias, why did she have to ask this question when everyone (including her) already know the answer. She also admitted that there’s nothing wrong with Honeylet’s shopping, but insisted that there’s also nothing with her report.
