Heneral Luna Movie: Philippines’ Official Entry to the Oscars 2016 (Trailer Video)
Yes, you read it right. The ‘Heneral Luna’ movie was chosen to be the official entry of the Philippines to the upcoming 88th Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category. The announcement was made this Monday, September 21, less than two weeks before October 1, the deadline for submission to the Oscars 2016. Watch the official movie trailer video below.
“We are happy to announce and share with everyone the good news: HENERAL LUNA has been selected as the Philippines’ Official Entry to the 2016 Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film Category!” A statement reads at the official Facebook page of Heneral Luna movie, along with its movie poster.
A masterpiece of film director Jerrold Tarog, the movie features one of the greatest local actor, John Arcilla, who portrayed the role of General Antonio Luna. He is known to be the most brilliant military general under the revolutionary government of Emilio Aguinaldo (played by Mon Confiado).
The other cast members include Epy Quizon (as Apolinario Mabini), Paulo Avelino (as Gen. Gregorio Del Pilar), Leo Martinez (as Pedro Paterno), Nonie Buencamino (as Felipe Buencamino), Alvin Anson (as Gen. Jose Alejandrino), Ronnie Lazaro, Arron Villaflor, Archie Alemania, Mylene Dizon (as Isabel, the love interest of General Luna), and many more.
“Never mind the alleged aggressive personality of Luna, this film shows the courage of Filipinos to fight for their freedom. This shows a positive picture of the Filipino. It depicts values that we think should appeal internationally.” Veteran filmmaker Mel Chionglo told Inquirer about the movie.
“Luna was supposed to have been a great general. What the film is telling its viewers is that it is also important to look at our past, especially those of our real-life heroes and of what they have done for the country.” Chionglo added, who led the committee tasked to select the movie to represent the Philippines to the Oscars 2016.
Produced by Artikulo Uno Productions and released on September 9, 2015 nationwide, the Heneral Luna reportedly had an estimated budget of a whooping P80 million. It received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising its plot, screenplay, cinematography, and acting, and is now considered as one of the greatest Filipino films in history.
The submissions from all over the world will be shortlisted to only nine films. They will later be trimmed down to five nominees, which will be formally announced on January 14, 2016. The 88th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 28, 2016.
But while we Filipinos celebrate another breakthrough in Philippine cinema, we are also sad that many Filipinos still prefer to watch lousy local movies. Unfortunately, many movie goers are more interested to watch love teams, slapstick comedy, and daring movies. Let Heneral Luna movie be a wake up call to us, so we can learn more about our past.
