Former ABS-CBN News Head Charie Villa Named PTV-4 News Head for Duterte Administration

Duterte Charie Villa PTV-4

Charie Villa will be the News Head for People’s Television Network (PTV-4), the Philippines government’s TV station. This is after she accepted the offer from incoming Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar, who will replace Sonny Coloma once President-elect Rodrigo Duterte takes his oath this Thursday, June 30.

A veteran in broadcast journalism, Charie Villa served as the Head of ABS-CBN’s News gathering and Online and Mobile Group, and was appointed News Head of the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group (RNG) in January 2011. She also worked as senior producer for Reuters News for about eight years, and has been a freelancer since December 2014.

Viila, who finished a degree in Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines, along with her friends Vangge Giorgetti, Mao Olidan, Lester Cruz, Deane Miguel and Melissa Dela Merced launched in July 2011. The website is a non-profit portal for Filipinos who want positive change in government and private companies.

“I told Martin about Tao Po and my hope that this government would be a responsive government,” Villa said, adding she agrees with Andanar on the plan to rebuild PTV-4 into a real public information hub for the televiewers. With this idea, the funds to improve and maintain the network will come from people’s taxes, and not from advertisers.

“It is something I have longed for: To create informative and useful programs on air and on line not for ratings nor political affiliations, but for the interest of the public.” She added, noting that being the news head of PTV-4 is in line with her advocacy to have a balanced venue where the Filipino people can finally interact with the government.

As we all know, Duterte has declared media boycott and accused them (especially ABS-CBN) of being bias. The incoming president stressed out that he will not anymore grant interview request from the Kapamilya network, noting that ABS-CBN did some favors to Liberal Party (LP) losing presidential candidate, Mar Roxas during the campaign period.
