Floyd Mayweather Loses WBO Title He Won From Manny Pacquiao Over Simple Reason

Mayweather cry Pacquiao smile

Floyd Mayweather lost the title he won from Manny Pacquiao last May 2015. And yes, the reason is very simple – Mayweather missed the deadline of paying the sanction fee to the World Boxing Organization (WBO). Guess what? The said fee is very, very small as compared to the money he received from winning the fight.

“The WBO World Championship Committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO Welterweight Champion of the World and vacate his title, for failing to comply with our WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests.” The WBO said in a statement.

Right after winning over Pacquiao, Mayweather announced that he will voluntarily give up all his boxing titles to give way to younger boxers, saying, “I’m not greedy. I’m world champion at two different weight classes right now. … It’s time to let other fighters fight for the belt.” The undefeated boxer added that he has lost love for the sport.

This Monday, June 6, 2015, Dan Rafael of ESPN tweeted Floyd Mayweather has been stripped of the WBO welterweight title per its championship committee vote that day. On Saturday, he reported that the American boxer could be stripped of the WBO belt after failing to pay the $200,000 sanctioning fee imposed by the body.

Here’s what happened. Mayweather received his prize money (around $200 million) from WBO after beating Pacquiao in the controversial but boring, the so-called “Fight of the Century,” and the ‘richest fight in boxing history.’ Therefore, he is required to pay the sanction fee to WBO so he can keep the title. The deadline to pay was last Friday, July 3.

But no, the title will not go Manny Pacquiao either. Instead, WBO will give the 147-pound belt to Timothy Bradley Jr, who beat Jessie Vargas last month, and won the interim WBO welterweight belt. Nevertheless, Mayweather will still keep his 48-0 record, and he has 14 days to file a petition to get back his title again.

By the way, $200,000 is only 0.1% of $200 million. This makes us now wonder Mayweather was not able to pay on time. But let me guess. He could still be under the spell of Rihanna, who blatantly put duct tape on his mouth during the recent BET Awards. He could also be busy talking to the mannequin of Manny Pacquiao.
