Iconic Filipino band Eraserheads is nominated for the upcoming Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 2015, where fans worldwide can cast their vote online. Eraserheads (or EHeads) is the first music band from the Philippines to be allowed to have the chance to achieve such prestigious international honor.
Established in 1983, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Cleveland, Ohio. Every year, the organization releases a list of nominees, as submitted by various committees from the US. The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductees are chosen by rock music experts and the Rock Hall voting body.
For the third consecutive year, fans are allowed to support their favorite musicians and bands through online voting. But for the very first time, Asian countries are allowed to submit their representative. So far, only the submission from the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit (OPM) was approved.
To be included as one of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductees, a musician or a band should have released their first single or album 20 years ago. Therefore, for this year’s ballot, nominees should have released a single or album in 1994 or earlier. Among all the nominees, only the top five will be inducted.
Formed in 1989, Eraserheads band members are Ely Buendia (lead vocals, guitar), Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro. Their debut album, Ultraelectromagneticpop! was released in July 1993. The group had a total of 7 studio albums including Circus (1994), Cutterpillow (1995) and Fruitcake (1996).
Among their most popular songs are “Pare Ko” (My Friend), “Ligaya”, “Toyang,” “Magazine” (Magazine), “Ang Huling El Bimbo” (The Last El Bimbo), “Huwag Mo Nang Itanong,” “Overdrive,” “Kaliwete,” “Spoliarium,” With a Smile, and “Para Sa Masa” (For the Masses).
But despite being one of the most successful and influential bands in local music history and had sold-out local and international shows, Ely Buendia left Eraserheads sometime in March 2002. Various speculations surfaced but Buendia later said the band broke up because of business matters.
An Eraserheads reunion concert was held on August 30, 2008 at The Fort Open Field, Taguig City. However, it was cut short after Buendia suffered from chest pains and was rushed to a hospital. Their second reunion concert was held on March 7, 2009 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.
Eraserheads has won numerous awards from local music award giving bodies such as Katha Music Awards, NU Rock Awards, Awit Awards, and MTV Pilipinas. Internationally, the band received the Viewer’s Choice Award for Asia in the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.
The band’s third album, Cutterpillow received high commercial success, selling more than 400,000 units as of posting. It was certified 11× Platinum by the by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI). The album holds the record of the best-selling album by a Filipino band of all time.
Last September, Eraserheads released two new songs via Esquire Magazine Philippines – “Sabado” and “1995.” The band members were featured on the magazine cover, mimicking The Beatles’ iconic pose when they crossed the Abbey Road in London, UK.
For the band’s nomination as one of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductees in 2015, Ely Buendia and the rest of Eraserheads have not yet released their comments. Nevertheless, netizens and fellow musicians including Bamboo Mañalac (former frontman of Rivermaya) already congratulated the band.
If inducted, Eraserheads will be the first Filipino band (or musician for that matter) to join the long list of international musicians who received the honor. This includes The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Bee Gees, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Eagles, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Elton John, and Michael Jackson.
For the the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 2015 inductees, the nominees are Green Day, N.W.A, Nine Inch Nails, the Smiths, Lou Reed, Sting, Kraftwerk, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Spinners, Chic, Stevie Ray Vaughan, War and Bill Withers, Marvelettes, and Eraserheads.
Online voting of fans started on November 30, 2014 and will end on December 30, 2014. The announcement for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 2015 inductees has no official date yet. However, previous announcements are usually done before June.
