Duterte Supporters Bash Rappler Reporter Pia Ranada Robles Over Roxas Night Market Photo Question

Davao Roxas Night Market Pia Ranada Robles

Rappler reporter Pia Ranada Robles was bashed by supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte when she asked them about a photo of Roxas Night Market in Davao City where the bombing took place last Friday night, September 2. Below are some of the exchange of messages on a Facebook group between her and some angry Duterte supporters.

“May I know what date and time these photos were taken? I just came from Roxas Avenue and I didn’t see this. It was an empty street, save for the shrine and a few vendors. (see my photo below taken around 11 pm on Sept 4, 2016)” Pia Ranada Robles commented at a photo at Duterte Today Facebook page showing Roxas Night Market resuming business.

Robles, who graduated magna cum laude from Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Communication, attached a photo to support her claim. Some netizens suggested that her photo could be answered her question politely, telling her that it will be better if she will check major news sites such as GMA News or ABS-CBN, instead of asking it on Facebook.

On the other hand, many Duterte supporters questioned her post, noting that she is suggesting that the photo showing businesses being resumed in the area is fake or outdated. Some of them even called her (and Rappler in general) being bias in reporting news about President Duterte, and told her to leave the page and should never come back.

Less than 8 hours later, Pia Ranada Robles replied to Duterte supporters telling them that reporters like her really asking questions from the public, and that her question has no intention of malice. She said that the Roxas Night Market usually closes at 12 midnight, but the area is empty or has almost no vendors when she went there at around 11 pm.

However, many Duterte supporters insisted that Robles’ line of questioning is impolite, suggesting that it would be better if she only asked what time the photo was taken, instead of adding that her photo is different. About three hours ago, an admin of Duterte Today commented to the Rappler reporter, saying that their photo was taken around 7-8 pm that day.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that Pia Ranada Robles was bashed by Duterte supporters. In early June, she had a rebuttal with then-Davao City Mayor Duterte about the ordinance in the city, stating that whistling to a woman is a form of sexual harassment. Duterte followers criticized her for making it appear that he violated his own rules.
