Dove Choose Beautiful Commercial Lets Women Choose Their Kind of Beauty (Video)
Women have different definition of beauty. But when it comes to describing their selves, not all of them are confident enough to say that they are beautiful. Others don’t even know that they are beautiful. This is the test that the latest Dove Choose Beautiful commercial has been up to. Watch the video below.
Uploaded last April 7, the famous beauty products brand set up two choices of doors in five cities around the world – San Francisco, Shanghai, Delhi, London and Sao Paulo. The left door is labeled “Beautiful” and the right door has “Average” on it. Women entering the building are free to decide which door they want to enter.
Cameras were set up to see the different reactions of women, and the result was emotional. At first, you can see that many of them cannot easily decide where to enter. Many women passed through the “Average” door, and of them said she didn’t even hesitate. Her friend could not believe she chose that door.
A woman in Shanghai said she passed through the Average” door because she think being beautiful is very hard to reach. Apparently, many women who did the same have almost the same reason – they grew up with the notion that they are not beautiful, and that they were used to be called as only “average.”
At one point, a woman decided not to choose between the two doors and left without entering the building. Later, some of the women who passed through the “Average” door said they regret their decision. One of them even said that next time she enters the building; she will use the “Beautiful” door.
But if there’s something that young girls should learn from, it’s the scene where a teenage girl wants to enter the “Average” door. Her mother was confident to enter the “Beautiful” door and pulled her daughter and persuaded her to do the same. The mother said that she wishes young women realize how beautiful they are.
The last woman on the video was supposed to enter the “Average” door, but decided on the last minute to pass through the other door. And when the women who used the “Beautiful” door without hesitation were interviewed, they said they felt good with their decision and will do the same over and over again.
“Women make thousands of choices each day — related to their careers, their families, and, let’s not forget, themselves. Feeling beautiful is one of those choices that women should feel empowered to make for themselves.” Dove said in a press release, about creating this Dove Choose Beautiful commercial.
But of course, not everyone is happy with it. Some critics say that this latest Dove commercial is not empowering women and instead pressuring them, given the fact that they know cameras were on them. Other critics said it would be better if women were asked to choose traits, instead of physical appearance.
Here at TN, we believe that this Dove Choose Beautiful ad was created not insult all women but to remind them that beauty is a choice. Whether we like it or not, we feel confident when people tell us that we look good. Being able to feel that you are beautiful adds self-esteem and courage in whatever you do.
And yes, we truly believe what the last woman on the video said, “Beautiful is a great word, so why not see what’s on the other side of that.” 🙂
