Dagupan City Elementary Schools Classes Suspended Because of Mar Roxas Campaign?

Classes in some elementary schools in Dagupan City, Pangasinan have been suspended, because there was an ongoing election campaign of LP presidentiable, Mar Roxas. This is according to an unnamed netizen who provided the details at the Inbox of Even Demata Facebook page this Tuesday, March 15, 2016. The concerned citizen said the information came from the teachers of those schools.

“Dito po sa Dagupan City ay ilang elementary schools ang suspended kasi po ayon sa mga guro ay gagamitin ng mga security guards ni Mar Roxas habang nangangampanya dito sa lungsod at karatig bayan.” A statement reads at Even Demata Facebook page, noting that he (or she) cannot imagine how many bodyguards Roxas has that the classes of the elementary schools have to be suspended.

The netizen did not mention when and how many days that the elementary classes have been suspended. But according to a report by GMA News this Monday, Mar Roxas campaigned in Dagupan City that day and talked to workers in a processing facility at the Magsaysay Fish Market, and to bangus dealers as well. There, he promised affordable loan rates if he will be elected president.

Later, Roxas had a meeting with former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Pangasinan Governor Amado Espino, Jr., Ilocos Sur Vice Governor Deogracias Victor “DV” Savellano, and around 30 city mayors in Pangasinan. The results of the meeting were not disclosed, but Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric Singson had a chance to talk briefly to reporters about the possible voting numbers of the Roxas-Robredo tandem.

Singson, who is also the regional chairman of Liberal Party (LP), said that the so-called Solid North has a “substantial” number of votes for Roxas. However, he said he cannot say how many percent that LP vice presidential Leni Robredo has. This is because vice presidentiable, Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. is from Ilocos region. He is the running mate of Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

Nevertheless, Singson noted that the other presidential candidates that are closed competitors in the Solid North are Vice President Jejomar Binay, who is from Isabela; and Senator Grace Poe, whose adoptive father, the late Action King Fernando Poe, Jr. (FPJ) is from Pangasinan. The total number of registered voters in the provinces in the regions of the Solid North is 5,777,889, the report said.

Meanwhile, we at TN cannot confirm if classes in some elementary schools in Dagupan City were really suspended because the rooms were used by the bodyguards of Mar Roxas while he is campaigning, as the netizen has claimed. If this is true, we are not sure if it is a violation of the Election law. But still, we think that young students should not sacrifice their time to learn just because some VIPs are coming.
