The country’s business leaders said they were impressed with the economic team of incoming President Rodrigo Duterte. The comments came after the two-day “Sulong Pilipinas: Hakbang Tungo sa Kaunlaran” consultative meeting by his economic managers with the business leaders this Monday and Tuesday, June 20 and 21.
The said meeting was attended by over 300 business leaders, such as members of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), The business group submitted ten recommendations to the incoming Duterte administration, which then presented its 10-Point Socio-economic Agenda as its plan for the future of the country’s economy.
This includes continuation and maintenance of existing macroeconomic policies, improvement of tax reform and more effective tax collection, increase of business competitiveness, acceleration of annual infrastructure, assurance of security of land tenure, promotion of science, technology, and the creative arts imporvement of social protection programs, and stronger implementation of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law.
During his speech, President-elect Duterte admitted that he is an not an expert in economics but emphasized that he is a champion in fighting crime and corruption. With this, he said he is relying his chosen economic team and Cabinet members, and that he believes they can deliver. He added that the PCCI’s recommendations are doable.
Among those recommendations are adoption of Comprehensive Tax Reform Package; implementation of national ID System; ease of doing business, improvement of internet and telecommunication services; support services to farmers; implementation of responsible mining; Development and implementation of national strategy; improvement of transport network, review of the conditional cash transfer program; and reduction in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) bottlenecks.
After the said meeting, business leaders lauded Duterte’s economic team, and said that they are willing to given them a chance to prove themselves. ECOP (Employers Confederation of the Philippines) President Edgardo Lacson said that Duterte has a good team, as they will be one to do all the techincal work. Likewise, Donald Dee, who is the Chairman Emeritus of the ECOP said he was very impressed with the incoming team.
Meanwhile, Wallace Business Forum President Peter Wallace admitted that he was earlier skeptical about the meeting, but is now impressed with it. He noted that the presentation is sending the good signal to the business community. He added that Duterte is man enough to accept his responsibilities as the next president of the Philippines.
