The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) breaks its silence this Friday, April 29 on the controversy over the bank account of presidential candidate, Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte at Julia Vargas Avenue branch in Pasig City. This is after Senator Antonio Trillanes IV accused Duterte of having millions deposited in his BPI bank account.
“Allegations of breach of client confidentiality have recently been leveled at the Bank of the Philippine Islands.” A statement reads on the official Facebook page of BPI about an hour ago. And although the bank did not mention any bank account name, it can be assumed that it was referring to Mayor Duterte’s BPI Julia Vargas bank account.

Earlier, Senator Trillanes revealed that Mayor Duterte has at least P211 million in his BPI bank account, noting that it was a joint account with Inday Sara, Duterte’s daughter. Later, Duterte admitted that he has BPI bank accounts. However, he denied that they contain the amount exposed by Trillanes, who did not show proof of his claims.
Along with Liberal Party (LP) standared bearer Mar Roxas, Sen. Trillanes challenged Duterte to sign a waiver so the details of his bank accounts will be revealed in public. This Friday afternoon, Mayor Duterte said he asked his legal counsel, Atty. Salvador Panelo to publicly open his BPI account on Monday, May 2 to prove that Trillanes is lying.

Now that BPI has already denied confidentiality breach of its account holders, people are wondering how Trillanes got his information about Duterte’s bank account. Many netizens also plan to close their BPI account for the fear of security breach. On the other hand, law experts say that Trillanes could be violating Republic Act (RA) 1405, also known as the Bank Secrecy Law.
