Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Amanda Gorely released her comment this Monday, April 18 on the so-called Duterte rape joke. This is after presidential candidate, Mayor Rody Duterte made a controversial remarks about an Australian missionary named Jaqueline Hamill, who was raped and killed in the 1989 Davao prison hostage-taking incident.

“Rape and murder should never be joked about or trivialised. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable anytime, anywhere,” Amanda Gorely (@AusAmbPH) tweeted She recently visited Davao City to attend the launch of Say G’day exhibition, as part of the 70th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between Philippines and Australia.

On the video uploaded by YouTube user Beatboxer Ng Pinas this Saturday, April 16, Mayor Rody Duterte can be heard sharing a part of the true story where inmate Felipe Pugoy led his team in taking 15 members of Protestant group called Joyful Assembly of God as hostages, including a 7-year old boy and 36-year old Jaqueline Hamill.

“I looked at her face, son of a b**ch, she looks like a beautiful American actress. Son of a b**ch, what a waste. What came to mind was, they raped her, they lined up. I was angry because she was raped, yes, that’s also one. But she was very beautiful, the mayor should have been first. What a waste.” Duterte said in Filipino language.

That 1-minute video went viral, and Duterte was heavily criticized by netizens. Later, his fellow presidentiables Vice President Jejomar Binay, former DILG secretary Mar Roxas, and.Sen. Grace Poe, as well as women’s rights group, Gabriela. This Sunday April 17, Mayor Rody Duterte explained his side in a 26-minute interview in Davao City.

“Totoo yon. sinabi ko yon. gutter language. but it was expressed in utter anger.” Duterte said on the first part. He later narrated what happened back in 1989 when he submitted himself as a hostage by Pugoy and other prisoners, to replace the prison guards who was then the hostages. The prisoners were eventually sent back to jail.

“I am even willing to lose the presidency. I do not make me apologize for something which I did — which was called for at that moment. I can lose Gabriela and all. I am sorry in general. I am sorry for the Filipino people. It is my style. It is my mouth. I said that in the heat of anger. but listen to the story behind.” Duterte said on the last part.
