The election protest filed by losing vice-presidential candidate, former Sen. Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, Jr. needs more time to review and answer, this is according to Atty. Romulo Macalintal, VP Leni Robredo’s election lawyer on his official statement released this Sunday, July 10. He also dubbed it as the longest election protest ever filed in history.
“This is unprecedented in the annals of political cases in our country. This could be the reason why the Supreme Court acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) deferred any action on said case when it was included in the tribunal’s agenda last week and instead to take it up again this coming Tuesday in its en banc session.” Macalintal said.
“For sure, it will take more time for the 15-member PET (Presidential Electoral Tribunal) to study each and every page of the 1,000-page protest and the 20,000 annexes before it could take appropriate action thereon.” He added, who earlier said that the Bongbong Marcos will need almost P127 million for all the expenses to his election protest.

That time, Atty. Macalintal noted that recounting of those ballots in question alone may take more than 3 years, adding that shipping all of them may already take a couple of months. But more importantly, the election lawyer said that there were no allegations that VP Leni Robredo is involved in any way in the alleged cheating in the 2016 elections.
In his latest statement, Atty. Macalintal said that demand of the Marcos camp for a failure of election in the 39,221 clustered precincts in 27 provinces is not under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, which acts as the PET. Instead, he said it is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Comelec En Banc, under Section 14 of Republic Act No. 7166.
“With the unusual length of said protest and its exceptionally voluminous annexes of more than 20,000 documents, the ten-day period to answer said protest would not be sufficient for Robredo and her lawyers to read and answer such lengthy and voluminous petition and annexes.” Atty. Macalintal further said, with Leni Robredo beating Bongbong Marcos by a very slim margin.
